Convict Notes
An accomplice in the murder of Robert Wardell on his estate ay Petersham about 1830. Turned informer, he escaped execution but the other two were hanged.
8/9/1831: Acquitted of stealing flour. 20/3/1832: Charged with Pocket picking - 1 watch 21s, 3 seals 1/- and 1 watch key 1s., from Wlilliam Gregory. Also on 20/3/1832: Along with 10 year old Thomas Pearce they6 stole 2 fishing rods, value 12s., from Jonathan Sparkhall. Pearce was foun d guilty, whipped and discharged. Brace - Guilty, transported for 7 years. He was 16 years old. June 1837: TOL District: Windsor. 6/5/1839: COF District: Port Macquarie. 7/1/1852: COF. Edward Brace was one of three absconders implicated in the death of Robert Wardell in 1834. The other two were hanged, but Brace excaped his fate by informing on the other two. He was 18. Description: Basket Maker, Born Hertfordshire, 5' 1/2" tall, fair and little freckled complexion, brown hair and eyes and a scar on the left eyebrow. 23/8/1834: Absconded from Adam Wilson, Lane Cove since August 3rd.Gaz. 16/10/1839 - Found guilty of stealing, was sentenced to serve 2 years to an iron gang. 27/9/1841: Arrested - He was lodging with Mr. Wilson, when charged with stealing china and glassware with John Harrison from Mr. Coten's shop in George Street. 5101847: Drunk, kicked the child of a Constable, escaped punishment. He married Ester Rowen in 1841 at St. Lawrence's Sydney. They had 5 children. 13/10/1858: In the Sydney Morning Herald - 'James' Emanuel Brace murdered his wife Ester Brace, he apparently hit her with a hammer. They were both heavy drinkers, and in the report it mentions his son Joseph was present. Joseph is one of the children named in the nsw bdm, which makes me think this is the same Emanuel Brace. He was found Not Guilty and discharged.
