Convict Notes

Recorders Court. Catherine Brady was indicted for stealing a hat, the property of James Hall. She pleaded guilty.' The Recorder said, that it would be better for her to 'withdraw her plea of guilty and put in a plea of not guilty and abide her trial, as the court could not mitigate the sentence by her confession of guilty. She would not withdraw her plea of guilty. The Recordera said, tlhat it appeared she was an old offender and that she was already eighteen months in gaol at two different periods; that her guilt on the present occasion was aggravated by having committed it in a public place of worship. He said that the court could make no change in the sentence by her putting in a plea of guilty, no more than if she were found guilty by the jury. The sentence of the court, therefore, would be, that she be transported beyond the seas for seven years. Freeman’s Journal, 25 June 1830.

Catherine Brady, a widow aged 50, is listed as "infirm". She was charged with stealing a hat, and convicted on 24 June 1830 (see NSW Convict Indents, 1788-1842, Annotated Printed Indentures 1831).
