Convict Notes

AGE: 31 years old when convicted (England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892 for William Braine; England; Oxfordshire; 1845).

TWO DROWN ON THE SAME DAY: At least two men were "supposed to have drowned" at Norfolk Island on 15 March, 1847. The second was William Burgess whose bio is at https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/burgess/william/7603. Neither man's Death registration or Conduct record refers to this coincidence, or to the circumstances of their drownings (Tasmania, Australia, Convict Court and Selected Records, 1800-1899; Register; Registers of convict deaths, 1845-1874).

William Brain was convicted at Oxford Ass on 05/03/1845 for burglary (1st conv.). 10yr sentence. Transported to Australia per the ship 'China'. Married man, 6 children. Assigned to Norfolk Island (east of NSW but administered by Van Diemen's Land). Drowned 15/03/1847.
