Convict Notes
Isaac was about 19 years old when convicted of Horse Stealing. Petition for Clemency: Reference: HO 17/34/76 Description: 1 letter (Robert Ferryman, Rector of Iping, Medhurst, Sussex, prisoner's Rector) on behalf of Isaac Brandy [Isaac Brandon] convicted at the Sussex Winter Assizes 1823, of horse stealing. Grounds for clemency: no aggravating circumstances, first offence, property was returned to victim quickly and no-one sustained material injury, orphan, youth, led astray by gang of thieves, if the sentence is commuted to imprisonment the petitioner will get the names and haunts of prisoner's associates under assurance that his information should not be divulged, nor acted upon further than watching these men and preventing their future designs and prisoner could become a useful member of society. Initial sentence: transportation for life, held on board a prison ship in Portsmouth Harbour. Annotated: 'bad character' and refused - 14 April 1824. EK24 Date: 1824 Mar 27 Held by: The National Archives, Kew. 19/5/1828 Sydney Gazette: Absconded from No. 8 Iron Gang – aged 23, Sussex, 5’7 ½” tall, grey eyes, brown hair, pale complexion. 3rd time of running. Isaac was then sent to Moreton Bay. 9/4/1830: Convict Death Register – Aged 24, died at Moreton Bay.
