Committed to Fisherton Gaol:—William Earl, of Allford, charged with stealing two sacks, the property John Roe and John Joseph Roe, Salisbury. James Brasher and Ann his wife, of Salisbury (well-known characters), are charged with receiving stolen goods, the property of John Roe and John Joseph Roe, at Salisbury. The said James Brasher is further charged with receiving twelve sacks, the property of Joseph Saunders, at Salisbury.— Salisbury Journal, 15 Feb 1841. Extensive Robbery.—For some time past, considerable quantities of malt have been missed from the stores of Messrs. Roe and Son, in this city, and last week, means were taken to entrap the thieves, which have led to the detection of three of the parties, namely, James and Ann Brasher, lodging-house keepers (whose house appears to have been receptacle for stolen property), and Wm. Earl, a labouring man. It is supposed that several others are implicated. The investigation of the above case has led to the discovery of another robbery; and a small tradesman, named Gray, has been held to to bail for purchasing the article stolen (twine) at an unfair price. Salisbury Journal, 22 Feb 1841. There were 13 prisoners for trial at the Salisbury City Sessions on Monday last:—James Brasher, for receiving 12 sacks knowing them to have been stolen, and ... were respectively sentenced to 7 years transportation; Devizes Gazette, 8 April 1841.
