Returned to Sydney, 14 Mar 1830. Description: Thomas Brennan, age 30, native place Clare, Ireland, 5 ft 7 ½, fresh comp, lt brown, grey eyes. FEB. 26.-Thomas Gorman, - Branan, and----------. Buckly, brought forward for attempting to commit a robbery on E. Bennett, a settler at the Seven Hills. John Meehan, servant, to Mr. Bennett deposed that five weeks ago he went into the hospital, the prisoner Brannon was in the hospital at the time, who questioned Meehan, whether his master (Bennett) had any money. Meehan told the prisoner he did not know but he had;. Branan then told deponent to go home and find in what part of the house the money was kept, and when the robbery was done he should have half. Meehan then went home and told his master, who desired him not to discourage the prisoners but to see Branan again and ascertain the night they would come, lest they should steal a march upon him; the prisoner then appointed Saturday night when he said would have "good comrades." Branan then asked Meehan for a hoe to break open the door, which was lent ; deponent then informed his master of the time appointed; Branan further told deponent to knock the priming out of his master's guns, and to pour water into them. The constables were in plant, and all was quiet until eleven o'clock, when the prisoners made their appearance, but Mr. Bennett rashly fired off his musket, and his man a pistol, which so alarmed the thieves that they made their escape, but were taken the next morning; they left behind them 3 pair of trowsers and a pair of shoes. Remanded. Sydney Gazette, 1 Mar 1827. John Gorman, Thomas Branan, and John Buckley, brought forward for attempting to crack the crib of Edward Bennett; being found guilty, they were sentenced each three years to a penal settlement.
