National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/38/90. Date. 1836 Dec 30 – 1837 Jan 20. Prisoner name: Thomas Brett. Prisoner age: 23 years. Prisoner occupation: Late [private] in the Rifle Brigade. Court and date of trial: Corfu Court Martial, 4 October 1834. Crime: Mutiny, namely using mutinous expressions to Lieutenant George Acklom of the 88th Regiment whilst on duty in Corfu. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'. Petitioner(s): Lieutenant George Acklom. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good conduct in detention. Other papers: Letter from [illegible] directed by Lord Hill [Commander-in-Chief] stating that he cannot find any extenuating circumstances to mitigate the sentence and that in fact the charge formed only part of the case, the convict having also offered violence to two non-commissioned officers in the execution of their duty and threatened one of them with a bayonet. Additional Information: Held on board Leviathan [convict hulk] at Portsmouth [Hampshire].

Thomas Brett was one of three soldiers who were court-martialled for desertion and insubordination - William Spencer, and John Brown were the other two. 7/3/1842: COF
