John Brewster was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 2nd Oct 1822 and arriving 4th Mar 1823 with 161 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Convict Notes
Tuesday the following convicts were removed from the town under Mr Vason and assistants to be board hulk at Sheerness, viz: Thomas Tufley, Hoe, Church, Butler, Stokes, and John, under of transportation for (7) years and Brewster for fourteen years sentence of transportation. Nottingham Journal, 31 Aug 1822.
Deakin, John Hoe and ? were Indicted feloniously stealing five and twenty bushels of barley and John Brewster knowing property have been stolen The barley which it said was fusty was brought in a boat by John to Simpson’s wharf the 29th of June last the boat and barley were afterwards taken to Robinson’s Wharf by Elliott who saw the sacks removed by the prisoners into Chetwynd’s cart William Chetwynd said that he had a horse and cart at Robinson’s wharf when three men asked him them. He took it to Mr Brewster’s by one of men’s orders. ... ... Brewster’s bringing him some barley which he bought of Machin of Burton The examination of Deakin and Brewster was produced Mr Sculthorpe— Guilty. Deakin, Hoe and Tufley to be transported for seven and Brewster for fourteen years. Nottingham Journal, 17 Aug 1822.
