Maiden name: Clegg. Married Robert Brearley at Bury, Lancashire, 13 Nov 1814. Robert Hardman Brearsley, on arrival in Hobart Town on the Layton in 1827, stated he was married with 3 children. Wife and children were in Rochdale workhouse. TAHO CON31/1/1 p. 178
Died Sydney 1836. Buried from St. Philips 23 Nov 1836. Ruth Briley 42 years. In Hospital. V1836233 20 Crime on indent is stealing poultry (not pottery). The following report appeared in the Manchester Courier 13 Jan 1827: Stealing Poultry We would beg to recommend to those keeping poultry, to see that they be properly secured during the night, since, at the present time, there are numerous gangs of marauders who make it their business to plunder every farm-yard and other place where poultry is kept, to which they can gain access. On Saturday last, two women, (Ruth Brierley and Mary Scholfield) were committed at the New Bailey, for stealing four fine geese from a farm yard near Rochdale. They were met, it appears, on the road to Manchester, with the geese in their possession and what led to the discovery of the theft was, the unusual manner in which the birds had been killed. Mary was not transported but received 1 year in prison
