Yorkshire Lent Assizes.  Wm. Briggs(21) for robbing James Barkley on the highway, in the township of North Deighton. - Yorkshire Gazette, 18 March 1826. HIGHWAY ROBBERY, WM. BRIGGS (21), charged with robbing, on the King's highway, James Berkeley, of Wetherby. The circumstances attendant on this robbery were very aggravated — The prosecutor, who is an old infirm Scotchman, was on his road from Knaresbro’ to Wetherby, on the afternoon of the 4th of January last when he met with the prisoner at Ribston, who told him he was quite destitute. The prosecutor took him into the public house, and there treated him with liquor, and offered to pay for his supper, bed, and breakfast. Soon afterwards the prosecutor set off for home, when the prisoner said he would accompany him. They walked on together till they arrived very near to the mansion of J. Brewin, Esq. of North Deighton. The prisoner  stepped behind, and knocked the prosecutor down. What do you want? inquired the old man. D— n you  your money; and your money I'll have, replied the prisoner. Another man came up, and stood upon the prosecutor's knees, whilst the prisoner took out of his pockets all his money, amounting to 24s. in silver. The old man entreated them to spare his life. The prisoner took hold of him, and after knocking his head repeatedly against the ground, left him bleeding in a state of insensibility. The prosecutor did not recover for a month. The prisoner made no defence, and the Jury found him Guilty.  Leeds Intelligencer, 30 March 1826. 39- Hulk Records. HO-9-7_2 (page 40/48) Retribution Hulk at Sheerness. Received from York, 4 May 1826. Wm. Briggs, age 21, H’way Robbery, Tried at York, 18 March 1826, Life, To NSW 31 July 1826.
