aged 26yrs; married (widow - husband deceased 2 and half years); country servant; 5'2 3/4"; Roman Catholic. Native Place: Queens Co.,Ireland Mother: Mary Brothers: William, James & Patrick Two children. One child, Eliza or Elizabeth, on board with her. (ref. recorded in Convict Indent) Various work service assignments in the Colony. Some notes of misconduct and punishments. Her child, Eliza was admitted to the Queens Orphanage, New Town nr Hobart on 4 Oct 1849, aged 2 yrs 6mths (this was a requirement by the Govt., so that mothers were free to be able to work). Eliza's record is under the name "Braiton" or "Brereton" (perhaps recorded because of the Irish accent). Eliza also appears to have used the name Margaret. Eliza was discharged from the Orphan School on 1 May 1857 to the care of her mother, who was now a free person in the Colony. (ref. Orphan 439 SWD6,7 & 28) 6 Mar 1855: Application for permission to remarry - to William Griffiths (free). Did not proceed. 25 Dec 1855: Ticket of Leave granted. 13 May 1856: Application for permission to remarry - to Patrick Prenty. Approved. 2 June 1856: Marriage to Patrick Prenty at St. Andrew's Manse, Hobart Town, according to the rites of the Church of Scotland. Eliza is however recorded on the Register as "Elizabeth BRENTON alias Nowlan", full age, servant. Patrick PRENTY, full age, labourer. (Ref. 37/1/15 no. 377) (Patrick's name may in fact have been "Plenty" or "Prunty" or "Printy" as he does not appear in records, other than this marriage, as Prenty. 27 April 1857: Free Certificate issued.




Eliza BRINTON, also k/a NOWLAN (NOLAN) was convicted at Queens Co. Ireland on 27 Oct 1848 for stealing clothing. 1st conviction. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Australasia' arriving 29 Sept 1849.
