Ellen Brison was transported on the John Calvin, departing 24th Jan 1848 and arriving 18th May 1848 with 92 passengers.
Built 1839 at Greenock, Scotland. Wood barque of 510 Tons. The 1848 voyage with Irish female convicts. The John Calvin, with 171 female convicts, arrived yesterday. She left London on the 26th December, and went to Kingston, when she took on board her prisoners, and left on the 24th January. There have been four deaths on board and three births, one infant still born. She did not touch any where and spoke no vessels for this place. Hobart Town Advertiser, 19 May 1848.

Married John COLE and lived in the Green Ponds district. CHILDREN: Elizabeth and Sarah COLE. No record found at Orphanage of the child who came from Ireland with mother Ellen. Father is recorded as Alex Mc...... A child born 1873, Mary Ellen Brison APPS whose mother is Elizabeth COLE, father John APPS, would appear to be a descendant. (ref. 33/1/5 no. 603) DEATH OF ELLEN: 28 June 1876 - Ellen COLE died at district of Glamorgan, Tasmania, aged 60 yrs. Cause - diabetes. Husband - John COLE, labourer. (ref. 35/1/45 no. 277)




Ellen BRISON was convicted at Antrim, Ireland on 16 June 1847 for Larceny - stealing a shilling money. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'John Calvin' arriving 18 May 1848. Single woman, one child. Country servant Protestant Aged 25 years.
