George Bentley BROADHURST was conviced at Wakefield, Yorkshire, England on 2 March 1846 for stealing lead and having a prior conviction. 7 yr transportation sentence. Hulk report: "good". Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship "Ratcliffe" arriving there 12 Nov 1848. Ship surgeon's report: "good". Aged 20 yrs; single man; kitchen garden hand; 5'8" height; fresh complexion; dk brown hair; Hazel eyes; thick lips; Roman Catholic; can read & write. Native place of birth: Harringdon, Yorkshire. Colony of VDL: Given Ticket of Leave upon arrival. Assigned to work services, at Bothwell, Tunbridge, Ross, Cascades, Picton. 1849: Ticket of leave revoked 23 Dec 1853: Certificate of Freedom issued Further conviction, in the Colony - under the name George BENTLEY. 27 Sept 1860 Launceston Court - stealing from the person. 12mths imprisonment. House of Correction, Launceston.
