Tasmanian Records. Conduct Record: https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Digital/CON31-1-1/CON31-1-1/CON31-1-1P200 No 407. Henry Brockley, per Coss. Harcourt, 1821. Tried Middx 6 Dec 1820, Life. Transported for Stealing watch from the person. Hulk report “Behaved indifferently” in the Gaol, tolerable well here, about 3 months. Stated M. at St James Market, a charwoman. Just one entry : Feb 4 1822. Drunk & disy, Repd. ------------------------------------------------------------- Description Record: https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Digital/CON23-1-1/CON23-1-1/CON23-1-1-P023 No 407, Henry Brockley, 5 ft 5. lt bro hair, blue eyes. Age 21. Gentleman’s servant, tried Middx 6 Dec 1820, Life. Per Countess Harcourt. Native place, London. Remarks: EW, heart and dart & laurel above elbow rt arm. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Henry managed to escape from VDL and make his way back to England. However, in April 1826, he was tried again a the Old Bailey for being at large before the term of expiration of his sentence and was again sentenced, this time to Death. The sentence was commuted, and he was again transported per Speke in 1826, when he was sent to pass his whole sentence at Moreton Bay penal settlement. Tried at the Old Bailey, 6 Dec 1820. 72. HENRY BROCKLEY was indicted for stealing, on the 9th of November , one watch, value 2 l.; one ribbon, value 2 d.; three seals, value 15 s., and one key, value 1 d., the goods of Henry Stowell, from his person . HENRY STOWELL . I am a patrol of Bow-street . On the 9th of November, I was at the fire in Duke's-court, assisting the sufferers in Broad-court ; I had my truncheon under my arm. The prisoner laid hold of my watch, and drew it out; I flung my hand back, and caught his hand with the seals in it. I secured him, and took him to the top of the court; there was a whistle, and a cry of rescue. I shoved him into a shop, and got assistance. I took him to the office. JAMES SHIELDS . I am a special constable. I assisted in securing the prisoner, and saw Stowell take the watch from him. GUILTY . Aged 21. Transported for Life . First Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Baron Garrow .
