Yesterday morning the following convicts found guilty at the last Assizes, were transmitted from the City Jail under a Military escort to Cork, for transportation to Botany Bay :— Daniel Connors, John Hourigan, Patrick Connolly. Thomas Bluett, Thomas Dainty, John Clark, Charles Carthy, William Broggy, Michael Hayes, Edmond Price, Michael Mahony, Patrick Higgins, and James Scully. Limerick Chronicle, 7 May 1828.

Assigned to Elizabeth Pitt. Was in a defacto relationship with Mary White, (arrived free per 'Duchess of Northumberland). Surname listed as Broggy, but deaths and birs of children listed as Brophy. 1839-1890: Michael Brophy 1843-1925: Margaret Brophy 1844: William Broggy/Brophy died. (Mary White married John Callinan/Callaghan in 1846 and had three more children.)




The indentures state that William Broggy was 24 years old. He could neither read or write: Religion Catholic: status single and a native of Limerick. He was a seaman and farm servant. He was convicted off pig stealing on 13 March 1828 and sentenced to 7 years. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 2 1/2 inches; complexion ruddy and freckled; hair dark brown and eyes dark grey. Transport number ? (blurred on sheet). He was assigned to the Elizabeth Pek, I think. He received his ticket of leave in 1833 (33/886) - Government Gazette states that he was in Richmond. He received his certificate of freedom in 1835 (35/972).
