Convict Notes

19 Nov 1877 - hanged at Launceston for the murder of Thomas Rudge. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/37152480 Launceston Examiner, Tas. Tuesday 20 Nov. 1877, p. 2 EXECUTION OF BRISHANHAN. The extreme sentence of the law was carried out yesterday morning, upon John Brishnahan, convicted of the murder of Thomas Rudge at Evandale. The executioner was Soloman Blay, who had arrived from Hobart Town a few days previously to make the necessary arrangements. The condemned man was attended to the drop by the Revs. W. J. Dunne and P. Gleeson, and he was very quiet in demeanor, and seemingly quite penitent, and prepared for his doom. Among those present at the execution were Mr George Smith, deputy sheriff ; Mr J.J. Hudson, visiting magistrate; Mr A. Jones, gaoler ; Dr. Murphy, several gaol officials, press representatives, and a few others. At 8 o'clock the bolt was drawn, and the prisoner was swung into eternity, death being almost instantaneous. Brishnahan arrived in the colony in August, 1852, by the Lord Dalhousie, and was 46 years of age.
