Essex Assizes. The following nineteen prisoners were sentenced to suffer Death, … Daniel Brown, for breaking into the dwelling-house of Rebecca Brand, Furleigh, in the day time of the 12th of July (being Sunday, and person therein), and stealing a £1 note, a half guinea, and 12s. the property the said Rebecca Brand; … John Cox and Thomas Smith, the last-named prisoner, are left for execution: the others were reprieved. Cambridge Chronicle, 31 July 1818.

Dan or Daniel Brown was convicted at Essex 27/07/1818 and given a Life Sentence. He departed on the 'Hibernia' from Portsmouth 20/11/1818, arriving van Diemens Land 10/05/1818. Hulk Report - orderly. Captain's Report - orderly. Convict no. 7807. 15/03/1825: Abscond from Launceston - 50 lashes. 1829: Committed murder of Stopford, with John Salmon, at Macquarie Harbour. (Hobart Town Courier gives graphic details of crime and trial date 7 March 1829.) (Such was the conditions and harsh treatment at Macquarie Harbour that these men committed murder in order to be transferred back to Hobart Town.) Described as a handsome man, aged 27yrs, pale sallow complexion. 02/03/1829: Executed for murder - Hobart Town. (Body taken to Colonial Hospital for dissection.)
