Daniel Brown was transported on the Guildford, departing 31st Jul 1811 and arriving 18th Jan 1812 with 214 passengers.
The ‘Guildford’ was built on the River Thames, England in 1810. Used as a Convict Transport ship to Australia - voyages 1812, 1816, 1818, 1820, 1822, 1824, 1827 & 1829. The ship was lost at sea near Singapore in 1831, loosing all aboard.

Colonial Secretary Papers. Windsor Court House, 16 February 1822. Sir, A person resident in this Town of the name of Daniel Brown, a bricklayer, has requested me to apply to endeavour to obtain Richard Potter, a prisoner now working in Woodcocks Gang near Campbell Town to be assigned to him as his Government servant, Potter being brother to Brown’s wife, and as Brown is an industrious man, with a family of four children and well able to maintain this man, I was induced to make application to the Rev. Mr Reddall that as that gentleman has … Macquarie Field, Feb 10 1822. Sir, In reply to your favor of the 2nd inst, I beg leave to state that , as the Road Gangs are sent to their respective stations , on a public duty, I have never thought myself at liberty to remove a man from these Gangs, except charged before me with some offence which justified the expedient. As however, I was on a boat visiting Sydney a day or two after the receipt of your letter, and anxious to accommodate your wishes, through a regular channel, I requested an order at the Colonial Secretary’s Office for the removal of the man (Potter) to your station. He was tried w/1other for stealing printed cotton etc of John (Hawkins) of Water Belchamp Essex at Chelmsford Exeter Assizes, sentenced to death reprieved to Life/7years, held at Chelmsford & arrived in NSW as a convict on 18 1 1812 after a voyage of 5.5months on GUILDFORD.>>> [Some details taken from this Website] Ellen (???) died on 3 2 1811. [Noted a David/Daniel (Brown) is recorded as being born in 1812.] Daniel (Brown) & Ellen (???) produced 3children: 1.-3.??? Mary (Wilmot) was born about 1786 in Hertfordshire. She was tried for theft of wooden box etc at St Albans Quarter Sessions Hertford, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 29 9 1811 after a voyage of 6months on FRIENDS. She seems to have had a first relationship with ??? (Potter). She is recorded in 1828 at Cornwallis with her family. She died on 5 11 1832 age46 at Windsor mother of 8known children. Assizes At Chelmsford, 14 prisoners were capitally convicted, and received sentence of death, viz. ... Daniel Brown and John Turtier, for burglariously stealing front the shop of John Hawkins, of Water Belchamp, several pieces of printed cotton and and various other articles; ... of whom the first three, Buttle, Ingersole, and Cole, were left for execution; the others were reprieved. Sainty & Johnson; 1828 Census of New South Wales: [Ref B2829] Browne, Daniel, 46, CP, Guildford, 1812, Life, Farmer at Cornwallis. 50 acres all cleared, 25 acres cultivated, 5 horses 48 cattle. # Also [Ref B2830] Browne, Mary, 41, FS, Friends, 1811. And 5 children named, viz:- Mary Anne 11, Ann 10-, Martha 6, David 7, Emma 4 all born in colony. The elder daughter Lucy aged only about 15 is married? to Jessie Upton and recorded there [Ref U0049].




In the colony, Daniel married Mary Wilmot (Convict, Friends, 1811). They married 30 August 1813 at St Matthew's, Windsor. Daniel and Mary had 6 children.




Daniel was transported aboard the ship 'Guildford' to serve a seven year sentence for larceny in a dwelling house. He left behind his first wife Ellen and three children. Ellen died 3 Feb 1811, just prior to his departure. Nothing is known regarding the three children.
