In 1798 he received a Hawkesbury land grant where he survived an Aboriginal spear that struck him in the throat. He was pardoned absolutely in 1799 for his diligence as a constable, and in the following year he was made an assistant grain assessor to Andrew Thompson. Married free settler Eleanor Fleming on 31st December 1800 at St. Johns' Chrch, Parramatta, they had 11 children between 1801-1824. Citation details: Year 188, p. 22, No 79 David Brown of the parish of Hawkesbury and Eleanor Fleming were married by permission of His Excellency Governor King this thirty first day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred by me Samuel Marsden. David signed the register and Eleanor made her X mark In the presence of Samuel Young and Ann Young who both signed the register. He resigned from his duties as constable in 1809, so that he could concentrate more on his own business interests. David became a farmer and in this pursuit he became quite successful and helped meet the colony's desperate need to feed the growing population of Sydney Town. He had one hundred and fifty five acres granted to him and he purchased fourteen other river front blocks including Owen Cavanaugh's and John Howe's original hundred acre grants. He owned thirty five rods of land in George Street, Windsor, later purchased by Thomas and John Tebbutil, and another four acres near Wilberforce. In 1820, he had a substantial stone house when he applied for further land to pasture his five hundred head of cattle and as a result was granted two hundred acres at the Wellende Creek – Hunter River junction on 31st March, 1821. He died intestate in January 1826. Widows having no legal rights at that time his eldest son, Joseph, inherited the estate. This Joseph was among the first squatters of the Liverpool Plains and the explorer Mitchell stayed with him, near where Taddworth now stands, during his trip north in 1831. Through both grants and purchases, David's landholdings grew to beyond 1000 acres by the time of his death at Wilberforce on 10th January 1826, at the age of 54. Eleanor died on 10th April 1865 at Wilberforce age 85.
