James Brown was born in Ayr, Scotland. He was convicted and transported along with Robert Edmonston (George the Third, 1834 to VDL) for "Robbery and Theft". James was described as a Shopkeeper; Address: Blackfriars Wynd, High Street, Edinburgh. He was also referred to as a Spirit Dealer, Forester (Scotland) and a shepherd. James was assigned to John Nowlan, Queanbeyan. 1839: TOL Queanbeyan 9/7/1842: COF 1854: Aged 40, married Maria Mary Wilhelmina Ursula Leithner/Lestner aged 38. The had 2 children, 1855 James and 1858 Mary Ann Brown both born at Tuggeranong, ACT. 11/5/1861: James died at Lanyon, ACT. Maria was born about 1816 in Norrow, Switzerland and died 29/3/1897 at Queanbeyan.
