The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Convict Notes
John Brown the Convict arrived on Ocean in 1818 refers to himself as John Neathway Brown in early 1830s and after marriage to Carolyn Cubitt. John Neathway Brown submits a return [No. 36] for the Census of 1841. At the time there were 14 people living on his Bunnerong property at Botany: 7 Males – two between 2 & 7; four between 21 & 45; and one between 45 & 60; 7 Females – two under 2; three between 2 & 7; and two between 21 & 45. By 1841, John and Caroline had a baby daughter and three other daughters aged 3, 5 and 7. John would have been aged about 44 and Caroline aged abt 28. When he dies in 1855, John Neathway Brown’s Will refers to the interest from the Estate of his Aunt Lynch in England. The probate of the Will and Testament of Elizabeth Lynch, widow of John Lynch of Brockenhurst, Hampshire, England dated Thursday, 12th June 1828, makes reference to, and makes provision for, "my sister Catherine Neathway's surviving children". Christening records for Lambeth, Saint Mary, England, indicate that Catherine Neathway had a number of children: Catherine [Born c1792]; Jeremiah [Christened 1793 d.1824]; Margaret [1795]; William Howard [1797]; Elizabeth Creany [1799]; Henry [1801 d.1802] Henry [1804 d.1825]; Mary Ann [1809]. John Neathway Brown is William Howard Neathway. Also, refer to Proceedings in the Court of Chancery, England 15 July 1852: Clerks of Records and Writs Office. Proceedings of the Old Bailey 1069. JOHN BROWN and WILLIAM JACKSON were indicted for stealing, on the 5th of September , a snuff-box, value 6d. and a handkerchief, value 6d. the property of William Culband , from his person . WILLIAM CULBAND . I was in Bartholomew Fair on the day in the indictment. I know my snuff box and handkerchief were safe when I went into the Fair. THOMAS WHITE . I saw Mr. Culband in the Fair, and both prisoners also. Brown came very close up to the prosecutor; I perceived that he drew something from the prosecutor's pocket; Brown immediately threw something from him, which I could not perceive what it was. JOHN HERDSFIELD . I took the snuff-box from Brown's pocket, but he snatched it from my hand, and threw it about ten yards. BROWN, GUILTY , aged 18. JACKSON, GUILTY , aged 23. 1828 Census, recorded as Publican residing in George Street, Sydney. Married Caroline Cubitt, aged 16 on 19 June 1829. Daughter of Daniel Cubitt, arrived 29 June 1792 (Second Fleet). Built Bunnnerong House at Botany, where he was residing when he died in 1855.
