The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Honored Sir, I humbly beg leave to return my sincere thanks for your kindness in presenting to His Excellency the lines I have written on his return from the Southern Settlements, addressed to him. I hope, Sir, that you will not take it amiss if I take the liberty of stating that I have been nearly four years in the Public School, Assistant School Master and have not during that period received any salary, and but one suit of slops clothing and no bedding, depending wholly upon the few precarious pence derived from the School Children’s parents, as a remuneration for my Services, Assistants in the other Public Schools as I believe allowed about Fifteen pound per annum, and as my conduct in this school has been proper and useful, I have no doubt, that would you have the goodness, to represent my case to His Excellency, that something would be allowed me, and in doing so you will confer a lasting favour upon, Honoured Sir, Your most Obedient & Humble Servant, John Brown. August 10 1821. I beg to state that Mr Brown is attentive to his duty in the Public School and has endeavoured to employ himself ever since he came into it. (Signed) Joseph M…? Most humbly sheweth That Memorialist was tried at Hertford 1816 and received sentence of seven years- arrived in this Colony per ship Ocean the second, and has been nearly four years Assistant in the Public School. Memorialist also states, that he assists in teaching nearly seventy children daily and has since his first commencement, adhered to his Duty with pleasure and assiduity. Memorialist therefore humbly prays, that your Excellency will condescend to take his case into your Humane consideration, and confer upon him the indulgence of a Conditional Pardon.
