On Monday the following 24 convicts, against whom sentence of death was recorded our late Special Assize, were removed from Fisherton gaol, and put board the York Hulk at Gosport. Maurice Pope, the Wiltshire pugilist, will seen, is amongst the number. John Jennings, George Shergold, of Wilton, H. Shergold, Thomas Whately, James Down, Isaac Cole, Wm. Francis, W. Lewis, Shadrach Blake, George Shergold, John Shergold, Joseph Watts, Geo. Durman, James Toomer, Maurice Pope, Gifford North, Wm. Cheater, Charles Davis, Laban Stone, Thomas Lawrence, John Pounds, John Ford, and Chas. Pizzie, to be transported for life. John Burrough, William Hibberd, Aaron Stone, Job Waldron, Robert Baker, Henry Toombs, John Reeves, John Orchard, Levy Brown, and Wm. Legg, to be transported for 14 years and John Remain for 7 years. National Archives – Petition record - HO 17/46/461 - Date -1831 Jan 10. 1 collective petition (10 people, yeomen from parish of Broad Chalke, Wiltshire) on behalf of Levi Browne [Levi Brown], 37 years, labourer, convicted at the Wiltshire Special Assizes in December 1830, for robbery [riot and insubordination]. There is also a covering letter from G Augustus Montgomery, Lord Radnor enclosing petition dated 12 January 1831. Grounds for clemency: previous good character - hardworking, honest, industrious and very sober, first offence, always been quiet and well behaved, came into this present situation without any ill design and is a respectable father. Initial sentence: not stated, commuted to 14 years transportation. GP 41
The Convict Annotated Indentures for the Eleanor state that all the convicts on board were transported for machine breaking except for Thomas Davis (Warehouse breaking); George Smets (or Smits) (Receiving stolen iron) and Pierre Tuite or Pierce Tait (for embezzlement). The last three convicts were convicted at Graham’s Town on Cape of Good Hope. They joined the ship at Cape of Good Hope.
