Henry BRYANT was convicted at Somerset, England on 18 Aug 1827 for housebreaking. Previous conviction. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Bengal Merchant' arriving 1828. Single man; aged 19 yrs; brickmaker's boy; 5'3 1/4" height. Native place of birth: Taunton, England. (ref. Convict record) Colony of VDL: 1830: Assigned to A Amos - absconding. 50 lashes. 1831: Assigned to A. Amos - absent & found at an Inn. 50 lashes. 1834: Assigned to A.Amos. Disobedience of orders and absconding. 60 lashes and 30 days in solitary confinement in the Cells. 1835: Assigned to A. Amos - insubordination. 3 yrs hard labour, in chains. 1836: Absent from his Chain Gang. 25 lashes. 30 Nov 1839: Application for permission to marry - Henry BRYANT ('Bengal Merchant') to Mary BROWN ('William Bryan'). Approved. (ref. 52/1/1 pg 21) 2 March 1840: Marriage - Henry BRYANT, aged 27 yrs; farm servant to Mary BROWN, aged 28 yrs, spinster. At Swansea School House, Waterloo Point, Swan Port, VDL. According to the rites of the Church of England & Ireland. Witnesses - Mary & Thomas MIDDLETON. Clergy - Rev. Joseph MAYSON. (ref. 37/1/2 no. 888) 3 Nov 1841: Conditional Pardon approved.
