The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Charles was baptised in Watford, Hertfordshire, on 7 June 1801. He was 15 at the time of his trial on 21 May 1817. He was not born in 1805.

Old Bailey: CHARLES BUCKMASTER and JOHN JUDSON , were indicted for stealing, on the 16th of May , one silver cream-pot, value 50s., the property of John Williams , in his dwelling-house . JAMES WARD. I am servant to John Williams, who is a tailor , and lives in Conduit-street . On the 16th of May, between eleven and twelve o’clock, I saw the prisoners on the area steps, that lead to the kitchen. I asked them what they did there? Judson said they wished to know if we wanted any shirt buttons - They then went away. MR. JOHN WILLIAMS. I keep the house; my cream-pot was in the kitchen, on the 16th of May; the next day the officer brought it to me. JOSEPH BERRY. I am a constable. On the 16th of May, I saw the prisoners, and another boy, in Monmouti-street - They went into several cellars; I took them into custody, and found the cream-jug under Judson’s coat, and two silver spoons and some shirt buttons in his pocket - He said he picked them up in Bruton-street. (Property produced and sworn to.) BUCKMASTER’S Defence. I found it, and gave it to Judson to carry. JUDSON’S Defence. He gave it to me to carry. BUCKMASTER - GUILTY . Aged 15. JUDSON - GUILTY . Aged 13. John Judson was transported to VDL per Countess of Harcourt in 1821. Colonial Secretary papers: BUCKMASTER, Charles. Per "Ocean", 1818 1818 Jan 16: On list of convicts disembarked from the "Ocean" and forwarded to Parramatta for distribution (Reel 6005; 4/3497 p.307) 1823 Feb 25: To take charge of the grazing run of Robert Campbell and the Palmers near Lake Bathurst (Reel 6010; 4/3507 p.367) 1823 c.Jul: On list of convicts employed by John Palmer (Reel 6056; 4/1765 p.182b) 17/9/1824: COF 1833: Married Ann Carpenter (daughter of a convict) at Sutton Forest, they had 5 children. 1841 Census: At Gunardoo, County Murray. 22/7/1867: Charles died aged 62 at Yass. Ann died in 1864 at Yass.
