Bumstead - ‘Bumpstead’ is understood to be an incorrect recording Elizabeth’s name, transcribed at the time of sentence into her convict record. Elizabeth Bumstead nee Shirley, was born on the 3rd of Nov 1791 in Westminster England, convicted of stealing pewter pots after the death of her husband 15 April 1830, sentenced to transportation to Hobart Tasmania, with her 5 children in 1830, she died on the 30th April 1853 and was buried at the Wesleyan Chapel cemetery at O’Briens Bridge Glenorchy, along side her youngest son George, daughter Caroline and un-named baby girl. Her daughter Mary Ann married James Davis then John Walduck, both of O’Briens Bridge. Daughter Elizabeth married George Clements and had two daughters Elizabeth and Caroline this family left to live in NZ after the death of Elizabeth Bumstead.
Elizabeth Bumpstead was aged 38 years when she was convicted for stealing four drinking pots from two pubs in London. She was transported to hobart VDL for 7 yaer in 1830 per Mellish, with 5 of her 6 children, Mary Ann, Caroline, Elizabeth, George and Sarah - Her other child, William was convicted in 1829 and transported per Mary to Hobart,VDL for life, aged about 18 years. The younger four children were placed in the Queen's Orphanage until they attained assignment age. Elizabeth Bumpstead died in 1853 aged 60 years, she was buried in Hobart. Her son George was convicted in 1853 of stealing brass brushes, he was described as being a blacksmith (trade obviously acquired whilst in Orphanage). He died in 1854 with an inquest fiding that the cause of death was a 'visitation of god'. Reference connection to George Clements confectioner.
