The "Hercules" ship was built in 1801 at South Sheilds, England. 1801 voyage from Ireland to New South Wales, Australia. Sailed via Rio de Janeiro and the Cape. A mutiny occurred just prior to their arrival at Rio - after 45 minutes it was quashed but 13 convicts had been killed. Jeremiah Pendergass was named as the ring leader and shot. 44 deaths in total on this voyage. There was then another ship, also named, "Hercules" built 1822 at Whitby, England who made 3 trips to Austraia, in 1825, 1830 & 1832.

Convict Notes




Henry Bunce (alias Henry Sibley). B.1804-1805, d. 21/12/1858. A labourer from Hertford, Middlesex, England, was sentenced to death (21/09/31 to 20/10/1831), commuted to life and transportation for stealing a horse. He arrived in Sydney on 16/10/1832 aboard the ship Hercules, aged 27. In time he was assigned to Mr Ross at Appin, probably to care for horses. He was granted a ticket of leave in 1841 – at that time working with horses in the Campbeltown area – and a Conditional Pardon in 1847. This enabled him to marry Emily Richardson (with the permission of the Governor) on 9th September 1847 at Campbeltown. Emily Richardson (1816 – 1854?) from County Clare (Ireland) was sentenced on 18th March, 1839 at Donegal to seven years and deportation for stealing clothes. She arrived on the Minerva 26/12/1839. Mr & Mrs Henry Bunce then moved to Strawberry Hills/Brickfield Hill (Sydney) where again Henry worked in the horse yards and they had four children. Henry in 1848/9, John in 1850, Emily 1851 and Thomas in 1852. Thomas died in 1853 and both Emilys also around this time, leaving Henry (Snr) with the two boys. Henry (Snr) died of tuberculosis in 1858.




Ticket of Leave 1841 (No.4/2283). Conditional pardon 1847. Married Emily Richardson (who arrived on the Minerva 26/12/1839. They had four children, two of whom survived childhood. Henry 1848 and John 1850. Emily predeceased Henry, who died of tuberculosis leaving two orphaned sons.
