Bedfordshire assizes.  Ashby Bunker, aged 97,(!!??) capitally convicted of stealing a sheep at Bletsoe: and Charles Craddock, aged 26, capitally convicted of breaking info the shop of John at Arisev, (Arlsey?) and stealing sundry articles; were sentenced to death, but both reprieved,  Cambridge Chronicle, 1 Aug 1817.  His age in this report is a misprint.

Family connections for Mark (Bunker) are: BUNKER Mark Ashby/Maxwell (Bunker) son of Edward (Bunker) & Mary (Ashby) was born on 12 4 1789 & became a labourer. He was living at Millbrook Bedfordshire when tried for disobeying an order of filiation-fathering an illegitimate child-at Bedford Assizes in 1815 & sentenced to 3monyhs in Bedford Old House of Correction from 30 9-22 12 1815. He was tried again for sheep stealing at Bedford Assizes Bedfordshire, sentenced to Life, held on hulk JUSTITIA from 1 9 1817 & arrived in Tasmania as a convict on 11 6 1818 after a voyage of 6months on LADY CASTLEREAGH; he was 5'6/7" fresh complexion brown hair grey eyes. He was assigned to Charles Edward (Cox). He was issued his Ticket of Leave about 1820 & married secondly Sarah (Good/win/Munro her second marriage) on 30 5 1820 at St Davids CofE Hobart. He died on 25 12 1868 age29 of apoplexy at Jerusalem Bottom/Colebrook Richmond Tasmania & was buried there. [Some details taken from this Website] Sarah (Good/win/Munro) was born on 1 12 1791 on Norfolk Island. In 1795 she was taken to Sydney with her father, returned in 1796 & then on 26 12 1807 with her parents as part of the first evacuation to Derwent Van Diemens Land on HMS PORPOISE, arriving on 17 1 1808: to Clarence Plains/Roaches Bay. She married firstly Benjamin (Briscoe) on 24 10 1808 at St Davids CofE Hobart & produced 7children. She was recorded at Hobart Town with her family on 2 10 1818. She was assisted with her children after the death of her husband by their uncle Captain (Brimstone) & Joseph (Bennett) (who embezzled her funds) while she farmed the 50acre grant & another 20acres she purchased. They later moved to Jerusalem Bottom/Colebrook. She died on 26 12 1871 age80 mother of 14children & was buried at St James Colebrook Tasmania. Mark Ashby/Max (Bunker) & Sarah (Goodwin) produced 7children: 1.-7.??? Benjamin Briscoe arrived in VDL on the Calcutta in 1804 - he did NOT come to VDL from Norfolk Island.

Mark Ashby Bunker was the son of Edward Bunker and Mary Ashby . No crime stated. Mark was 25 years old on arrival in VDL. He was 5’7” tall, grey eyes, brown hair. First assigned to Mr Cox. 31/12/1830: TOL 30/7/1840: Free Pardon. 20/5/1820: Mark married Sarah Goodwin – he was listed as Max Bunker on his marriage certificate. Sarah Goodwin was born on Norfolk Island, daughter of Letitia Munro 1771 - 1856 and Andrew Goodwin 1756 – 1835. They moved to VDL in 1807. Two months short of her 17th birthday on the 20/10/1808 Sarah married Benjamin Briscoe a convict who had been on Norfolk Island, he accidently drowned. They had seven children. By 1819 Sarah was a widow, and on 20/5/1820 she married Mark Ashby Bunker. Sarah and Mark Bunker had seven children. Sarah died 26/12/1871 at Colebrook, Tasmania. 25/12/1868: Mark Bunker died at Richmond, Tasmania from ‘Apoplexy’, he was a farmer. The informant was Henry Briggs, Grandson, Jerusalem.
