This case has for some time excited a considerable amount of interest in the district. It seems that a medical man named Jermyn had prescribed leeches for Mary Madden, who was suffering from scarlatina. The brother of the poor woman did not apply the leeches, but, took her to Mrs. Scarsbrick, who, it seems, allowed her to remain in her house out of motives of compassion rather than with the intention of profiting by her as a patient. Mary Madden, however, died, and as it was asserted that she might have recovered had Mr. Jermyn's prescription been administered, Mrs. Scarsbrick was, as has been stated, charged with having occasioned her death. The magistrates discharged the accused, remarking that they found she had not undertaken the medical care of the deceased, and that what she had done was from motives of humanity and compassion, and she was therefore discharged without a stain on her character. 7/1/1903: Bridget Scarsbrick died, aged 86, and was buried at the Port Fairy Cemetery, Victoria.
