CLONMEL ASSIZES, MARCH, 1826, … To be transported for Life—Richard Burke, ..., for manslaughter, ... Limerick Chronicle, 15 April 1826.

At the Clonmel Assizes, Richard Burke was tried before the Lord Chief Justice, for the murder of George Groves, on the 12th of July, at Cloghjordan. It appears, from the evidence of the daughter of the deceased, that a mob of persons had collected in the street of the above village, on the dav named, for the purpose of attacking some other individuals, of an opposite party and that the prisoner, who belonged to the former party, with others, pursued the deceased as he was returning home, and struck him in the head with a stone, which knocked him down and caused such a wound that he died in consequence five days after. The. Jury brought in a verdict of manslaughter and the prisoner was sentenced to transportation for life, after he had received a suitable admonition from the Chief Justice, who remarked what a deplorable state must society be in when upwards of 200 men could assemble in the town of Cloghjordan, for the purpose of fighting against others, merely because they were of a different religion. Enniskillen Chronicle, 13 April 1826.
