Winifred Burke was transported on the Margaret, departing 30th Apr 1840 and arriving 18th Aug 1840 with 78 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Winifred was the daughter of Patrick Burke and Mary Ward/Burke. Dates of birth range from 1820 to 1823. Her occupation was a 'Kitchen maid". 1/4/1841: Married James Sach (Lord Melville 1829) in Windsor NSW – they had 4 children. 12/7/1847: COF 14/3/1849: Married Richard Fritchley, (Marquis of Huntley 1835) Fish River, NSW – they had 6 children. Winifred died at Granville, NSW and was buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood.




Kitchen maid, convicted 6/4/1840; Convict transport Margaret (3), Master Ed.Canney; Surgeon Colin A Browning, with 130 Irish female convicts, from Dublin on 30/4/1840; arrived Sydney 17/8/1840. Married 1) James Sach, 1/4/1841 at Windsor, 4 sons; 2) Richard Fritchley (under name Elizabeth Sech)14/3/1849 at Fish River, 6 children.
