On Thursday night four convicts, named John Burleigh, John Cone, alias Iron, Jonas Crick, and Samuel Clow, contrived to make their escape from Ipswich jail, and have not since been heard of. Early on the morning of the 5th instant, the following Prisoners effected their escape from our County Gaol, Namely, John Burleigh, John Cone alias Iron, and Samuel Clow, for trial at the next Assizes; and Jonas Crick, for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, in this town; but, from the great and active exertions of many friends, three of them were re-taken and brought back on the following day; and there is every reasonable hope that the fourth (John Cone alias Iron) will not long at large. In consequence of the above circumstance, there was there was a Meeting of the Magistrates at the Gaol—Sir T. B. Gooch, Col. Edgar, and the Rev. John Longe—to enquire into the particulars, who were pleased express themselves satisfied it was not through any neglect of the Keeper.
