James BURNS was convicted at Agra, India on 11 Oct 1847 for insubordination and striking an Officer (Corporal Wallace) in the Army. Had served for 7 yrs in the army. Life Sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Gazelle' arriving Hobart 7 April 1848. Aged 34 yrs; soldier/labourer; Roman Catholic; can read & write; 5'7 1/2"; fresh complexion; brown to red hair; Hazel eyes; single man. Native place of birth: Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland. Brother: John, at Kildare Sister: Sarah, at native place. VDL: 2 yr Probation Period. 1st Station: Cascades (south Hobart) 1850: at Tea Tree, Prison Barracks Hobart, Impression Bay, Huon, Browns River, South Arm. 1851: at Macquarie Point. 1852: at Port Arthur 1853: at Ouse, Hobart. 1854: at Ross, Fingal. 1855: at Launceston & Fingal. 1 Feb 1855: Absconded.
