James BURNS was convicted at Agra, India on 11 Oct 1847 for insubordination and striking an Officer (Corporal Wallace) in the Army. Had served for 7 yrs in the army. Life Sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Gazelle' arriving Hobart 7 April 1848. Aged 34 yrs; soldier/labourer; Roman Catholic; can read & write; 5'7 1/2"; fresh complexion; brown to red hair; Hazel eyes; single man. Native place of birth: Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland. Brother: John, at Kildare Sister: Sarah, at native place.
