William Burns was convicted at Umballa/Ambala, a district of Delhi, India for insubordination - strick a superior officer by throwing a brick at Sgt. Dunn. 61st Regiment. 14yr transportation sentence. Transported from Calcutta to Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Gazelle', arriving 07/04/1848. Aged 24yrs; 5'7"; soldier/labourer; Protestant; can read & write; sallow complexion; black hair; brown eyes; single man. Native place of birth - Stockport, Cheshire. Previously in the 35th Regiment. 14 months Probation at Cascades (south Hobart). Ticket of Leave 26/12/1854 Conditional Pardon 29/09/1857 Certificate of Freedom 08/10/1863
