Martha Burrell was my great-great-great-great-great grandmother. Her trial date was 12 January 1796. She was imprisoned on a hulk for over 3 years, during which time she gave birth to a son, before being transported to Australia. Notes: Arrived in Australia as a convict aboard "Speedy", 10th fleet, 15 April 1800. Also with her was her son John(2 years). It is believed Martha told her son John that his father was an officer named James Burrell. This name appears on John's Death Certificate and Martha's maiden name left blank. The "Speedy" weighed 313 tons and was built in the River Thames in 1779 as a whaler. The vessel was under the command of Capt. George Quested and along with HMS Minerva and Friendship formed the tenth fleet. On board the Speedy were 53 females convicts, three of whom died en route. Also on board was Capt. Phillip Gidley King to replace John Hunter as Governor, George Caley and Francis Barrallier. The voyage took 142 days and went via Cape Horn. On arrival in Australia Martha was allowed to work for Thomas Sharpe (Private: arrived in Sydney NSW 17 September 1791 aboard "Sugar Cane". He was in Capt. Macarthur's Company, New South Wales Corps (Rums Corps), later renamed 102nd Regiment of Foot. He transferred to the 73rd Regiment of Foot, 1st Battalion about 1812). Martha and Thomas were married on 13 March 1810 at St Phillips Church, Sydney , Rev,William Cowper officiating. The muster of 1823 lists Martha as a widow of Richmond. (Thomas died 29 January 1823). The 1828 census Martha was recorded under the name Bunnell ( ? mispelling of Burrell) as living with James Paget (Pagett per Neptune 28 June 1790)in Richmond NSW with the two youngest Sharp children.
