Convict Notes

Cork Summer Assizes, 1845. Ellen Burton was presented by the Grand Jury vagrant, and person of infamous character, she traversed to the presentment; and was accordingly given in charge. Constable Michael O'Neale, on being sworn and examined, stated that he was a constable, stationed in Cork for the last six or seven years, and that she was a prostitute, and was constantly the habit of lying in the fields and sleeping there; she was frequently in Bridewell for being drunk. Head Constable Condom deposed that the prisoner was a notorious drunkard—the Constables were often obliged to take her to Bridewell on their backs. The Jury then found for the presentment. . The Chief Baron said the Act of Parliament under which the prisoner was indicted, allowed the prisoner three months to provide security for her good behaviour—and unless two sureties of each came forward for her within that time she should transported for seven years. Cork Examiner, 6 Aug 1845.
