Joel was born about 1828. Both his parents had died by 1838 and he then resided in the Biggleswade Union Workhouse, Bedfordshire until he was sent to Parkhurst, where he was taught to read & write and learned his trade. Joel landed in the Port Phillip District of New South Wales.He married in 1850.
