National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/3/81. Date: 13 Aug 1831. Prisoner's name: James Butcher. Prisoner's age: 20. Court and date of trial: Suffolk Summer Assizes 1831. Crime: Setting fire to a barn in the year 1824 property of Jasper Pierson of Framlingham, Suffolk. Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Character indifferent. Outcome: Nil. Petitioner: The convict. Grounds for clemency: Was under 14 at time of crime; was led to committed crime by others who were older; prosecutor has put off trial several times on grounds of absence of a material witness named Roe; convict suffering mental torture in prison as a result; jury recommended him to mercy. Other papers: John Robert Tunney, Chaplain and Samuel Johnson, Keeper certify that Butcher has behaved in an 'orderly and exemplary manner' while in Ipswich Gaol.
