His Ticket of Leave was sustpended for his assault on Mary Jones, for which he was fines two pounds. In Sept that same year he was once again fined two pounds for being drunk. The recommendation for his ToL was for his 'services at a fire' 14 Feb 1853.

Described by the Surgeon as a "Steady quiet man" and a widower with 2 children (!!) Edward could read. He is described as being 5'5 1/2 Age given as 25 yrs, of dark complexion and hair with an oval head and grey eyes. He had a burn on his right arm and was freckled. His trade is given as ........"illegible".... Throughout this period, male convicts were being transferred from there to Tasmania, as a result of their sentences there having expired; some had been sent there from Tasmania, others had been sent direct from Great Britain. 28/8/1848 G Shaw Richmond 18/6/1849 Glen..... 23/8/1849 returned to servitude 26/12/1850 B. Benn..... Neglect of duty and gross misconduct (assulting Cont. Noyes in the execution of his duty) resulted in 20/3/1852 sent for a trial at W T Noyes' farm, Swansea 14/12/1853 Recorded : Services at a Fire 6/1/1854 Edward was found guitly of gross misconduct / absent without leave and spent 9 months hard labour in chains. 7/12/1854 D Rivers 20/7/1854 .... 8/8/1854 Apslwan, Swansea 15/5/1855 It appears that a TofL/Free by Servitude was recommended for Edward's involvment in an assult of Mary Jones - he must have assisted or thwarted this. His involvement with Mary was to result in their marriage and long life together. AOT : Consent to Marry - JONES Mary free BUTLER Edward Hyderabad 08 APR 1856 CON52/7 p42 RGD37/15 : 1856/56 resulted a year later. His Ticket of Leave became Absolute on 4/10/1859 and a Conditional Pardon was recommended on 21/11/1859 and Approved 22/5/1860 The family appear to have relocated from Glamorgan to Norfolk Plains (Longford) in 1867 - Hannah's birth was recorded in Glamorgan, while her Baptism was recorded in Longford.
