Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The convict indentures state that Ellen Butler was 24 years old. She could neither read or write; religion Roman Catholic; status single and a native of County Carlow. She was a country servant. Ellen was convicted on 3 April 1838 at Carlow and sentenced for 7 years for stealing a frock. She had one prior conviction and served 9 months. Physical attributes: height 5 feet 3 1/4 inches; complexion fair ruddy; hair brown and eyes hazel. Transport number 12. Prisoner number 12-39. Received Certificate of Freedom in 1845 (number 46/723).
