Francis William Byrt was the son of William Byrt born 1792 and Harriet nee Brooks of Shepton Mallet, grandson of William Byrt born 1762 and Sarah nee Hyatt born 1774.

Francis Byrt was convicted at Somerset Ass 31/03/1845 for burglary and stealing 20 watches. 15yr sentence. First conviction. Native Place: Shepton Mallet, Somertshire, England. single man; 5'11"; farm labourer; Protestant. 142 days gained off sentence time by extra work. Found murdered, at Franklin (south of Hobart) 10/08/1851. Transported to Norfolk Island then Van Diemen's Land.
