Mary CAFFRY was convicted at Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland on 10 July 1848 for Vagrancy. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Maria' arriving 23 July 1849. Aged 22yrs; single woman; Roman Catholic; housemaid; 5'1 1/2". Native Place: Lancashire Father: Patrick, in the 67th Regiment at Drogheda Brothers: James & Samuel - soldiers Sister: Sarah Station Gang: 'Anson' hulk. Assigned to work services and also spent time at the Female Factories at Hobart and Ross. 26 June 1854: Ticket of Leave granted. 1 Nov 1853: Application for permission to marry John Deverall. (Did not proceed) 9 Sept 1854: Application for permission to marry William KERR. Approved. 9 Oct 1854: Married William KERR, at Ross, district of Campbell Town, Tasmania. William aged 27yrs, bachelor, shepherd. Mary (Caffrey), aged 26yrs, servant, spinster (ref. notation on Convict Conduct Record sheet & Reg. 37/13/96 1854) William was recorded as "free" but his sentence may have expired - possible William Kerr per 'Joseph Somes' 1846 (he had been pardoned in 1853 and living at Ross)- ?
