Petitioner(s): Ellen Connell, mother of the prisoner, from Castle Island [Castleisland], County Kerry, Ireland, with Charles Fairfield, Departmental Lieutenant County Kerry. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner’s good character; others convicted for the same crime received sentences of seven years; innocence. FRIDAY. This morning, John Connell, 21, Morrice Lyons, 22, and John Callaghan, 20, were charged on the Coroner's inquisition, with the wilful murder of Robert Ross, at Chatham ; and Timothy Lawler, 23, Bartholomew Brassman, 19, Dennis Doyle, 20, Joshua Sykes, 19, John Baynan, 19, Michael Farrell, 20, and Robert Johnson, 20, with aiding and abetting the said John Connell, Morrice Lyons, and Callaghan, in the said murder. Dover Telegraph, 16 March 1839. MAIDSTONE ASSlZES.—Saturday John O'Connell, Maurice Lyons, and John Callaghan, were indicted for the wilful murder of Robert Ross, at Chatham, on the 21th of October last; and Timothy Lawler, B. Brassman, Dennis Doyle, Joshua Sykes, John Buynon, Robert Johnson, and Michael Farrell, for aiding and abetting in the said Murder. The jury returned a verdict of Guilty of Manslaughter against O'Connell, Lyons and Callaghan ; and acquitted all the others. Globe 18 March 1839. All the men involved were soldiers.
