John Callis came from Allington/Ancaster and was 19 years old when convicted of 'Stealing 2 blue 'smockfrocks', 2 pairs of trousers, 2 waistcoats, 1 cotton and 1 silk handkerchief and 1 'horse topping', the property of his "fellow servant" William Cont'. John was single, illiterate, 5'5½" tall, ruddy and slightly pockpitted, brown hair, blue eyes, scar right side of forehead, small scar upper part of nose crown, woman, anchor MBIC 1835 worn left arm."family connections appear respectable", but "since in custody he has threatened to blow Mr Barbers [his former employer's] brains out if he ever got at liberty". 1837 Muster: Age 20, assigned to H.H.
