Convict Notes

Research for McGowan (2022) Policing the Metropolis of Scotland, 1833-1861 (Edinburgh City Archives) Volume 1 - but not used, suggest that the following account pertains to Margaret Campbell: In November 1832, Helen McGhie, Margaret Campbell and Mary Smith or Hill were convicted at Edinburgh High Court of Justiciary of theft of £9 notes & 3x half-crowns from Antony Illery Ballot, medical student. The trial (fully reported) included the evidence of 'William Kelman, policeman' who recovered some stolen notes that were identfied. The accused were found guilty - McGhie a 'habit & repute' thief received 14 years transportation, and Campbell and Hill each received 7 years transportation. - see Scotsman newspaper 10 November 1832 p 3 on 'High Court of Justiciary'.
