Convicted and transported as John Campden but birth name was John Camden and used Camden throughout his term and beyond. Assigned to Leslie Duguid at Maitland as Brass Founder on arrival. Absconded in Jan 1833, re-captured Feb 1833 and given 50 lashes. Convicted in 1833 for killing sheep, sentenced to life commuted to 3 yrs. Sent to Woolloomooloo Stockade to work on rock gangs and remained there for rest of sentence becoming Stone Mason. Given 25 lashes in 1834 for Neglect of duty. Wrote to Governor in 1844 requesting commutation of sentence because he was innocent of killing sheep and term should be finished. Investigations proved this to be true and was released 4 April 1845. Papers from Secretary of Colony and Principal Superintendent of Convicts’ Office confirm link between sentenced name Campden and real name Camden. Served full 14 years, Certificate of Freedom No. 45/457 for John Campden, confirms that: • Height: 5 feet 5 inches • Complexion: Fair • Hair: Brown • Eyes: Hazel • Distinctive tattoos. Married Sarah Mulholland Dec 1845.
