Waterford Assizes. … Patrick Cantwell and Patrick Corcoran, indicted for burglariously entering, the night of the 6th instant, the dwelling-house of Lieutenant Fish, and stealing thereout a quantity of plate, house linen, wearing apparel, &c. were arraigned and pleaded Guilty, The Judge intimated to the prisoners that as their crime had been unattended by any circumstance of atrocity or violence tending to endanger the lives of the inmates of the house they had plundered, he would merely record sentence of death against them, but would use his influence to procure a commutation of that sentence to transportation for life. ... Patrick Cantwell, per Cambridge, Tried at Waterford City, 17 July 1826, Burglary, Life. Indoor servant and groom. Colonial Sentence: Gen. Sess. Windsor. 8 Dec 1827, Fraud. 3 years. Returned to Sydney 16 Jan 1831. -------------------------------------------------- Police Report, Windsor, Patrick Cantwell was charged with a fraud. He had taken a book, used as a pass-book between his master and a shopkeeper, at an opportunity when the new entry must come at the top of a new page, and had drawn some calico and shoe ribbon on his master's account, appropriating the same to his own use. He had then taken out the leaf bearing this entry, and the next time the book was sent another servant took it; but the fraud was detected. The prisoner confessed his offence. Sentence, 3 years to a penal settlement, where Mr. Cantwell may cant a long while, and must cant a great deal better before he become so comfortable as he is at present, without canting at all.
