John Capewell was transported on the Edwin Fox, departing 24th Aug 1858 and arriving 20th Nov 1858 with 284 passengers.
892 ton ship, built in Calcutta, India in 1853. Transported convicts, pensioner guard, soldiers and their families - from Plymouth, England to Western Australia - 1858. (Had been to Australia previously, in 1856, as a passenger ship.) (Later went on to service in the Crimean War.) Converted to be a passenger ship and carried immigrants to New Zealand. In 1880 converted, again, as a cool storage facility in Picton, New Zealand. Ship was in use until 1950 when abandoned. In 1965 she was bought by the 'Edwin Fox Society' and towed to Shakespeare Bay for restoration and then towed to Picton Harbour, New Zealand for display and is on the National Trust Registry, NZ. She is the second oldest surviving merchant ship.

In 1842, John Capewell (19) married Lydia Massey at St Mary the Virgin, in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England. In 1851 England Census, John Capewell (28), a shoemaking journeyman, and Lydia (26) were living at Heath, Uttoxeter, with their 4 children, William (7), John (5), both scholars, Mary (3) and Eliza (1). On 10 December 1856, John Capewell was convicted of Larceny at Derby Assizes and sentenced to 8 years transportation to the Colony of Western Australia. The Western Australia, Convict Records has John Capewell as Convict no.5280, aged 34 yrs, with his physical description, occupation shoemaker, married with 6 children. The Ancestry copy has the Convict Department record dated 1 November 1958. He was transported on the ship “Edwin Fox" with 283 convicts. A summary sheet in Ancestry Family Tree 104322111 has that he arrived on 21 November 1858,, had a ticket of leave dated 31 October 1860; a conditional pardon date and place as 2 May 1863 at Fremantle; certificate of freedom date as 12 December 1864; and that he had married a Lydia Pritchard on 1 June 1864. According to a story by Garry Capewell his crime was burglary[1]. West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954), Saturday 16 August 1884, page 3 John Capewell, a bailiff, who was next called,… Cross-examined, witness said he had always kept himself 'most respectable.' He had married a widow, but had latterly cohabited with her daughter, although the mother was still alive.[2] Their first child was born on 2 May 1863, 13 months before they were married, with the ABI record having Lydia Pritchard as the mother, (Lydia's maiden name). On the Australia, Births and Baptisms record their daughter's name is given as Priscilla Prudence Capewell, whereas the Ancestry FT 58144504 has her as Priscilla Prudence Jones Capewell. Frederick Pritchard Capewell was also born in Fremantle, in 1867, although neither an ABI or ABB record seem to exist; the details are on his Find A Grave Index record. Then Arthur Edward Capewell born, although his ABI record has his first name as Alfred, in 1873, also born in Fremantle with his mother as Lydia Jones. It does not seem to be known where Florence Lydia Capewell was born in about 1876, nor Ada May Capewell in about 1879, but their last child, William George Capewell has an ABI record indicating his birth was registered iin Fremantle in 1883. Five years later, on 10 December 1856, John Capewell was convicted at Derby Assizes for burglary and sentenced to 8 years transportation to the Colony of Western Australia. At the time of conviction, he is recognised as a widow. It is believed his wife passed in 1856 along with his infant daughter Annie. This is quite possibly the cause of his behaviour. He started drinking heavily and found himself with unsavoury characters. 1861 census 5 of the 6 children are living with John’s father and brother. There is no reference to his wife Lydia Massey or the sixth child Annie. He is known to have employed up as many as 45 Ticket of Leave Men during this period. John never again finds himself in trouble with the law. He takes on the role of a bailiff in his later years. A position that sees him beaten for doing his job. He received his Certificate of Freedom on 12th December 1864. John Capewell's age is given as 64 when he passed away in 1890, with his death registered in Western Australia.

It does not seem to be known where Florence Lydia Capewell was born in about 1876, nor Ada May Capewell in about 1879, but their last child, William George Capewell has an ABI record indicating his birth was registered in Fremantle in 1883. Perhaps all the children were born in Fremantle. He is known to have employed up as many as 45 Ticket of Leave Men during this period. John never again finds himself in trouble with the law. He takes on the role of a bailiff in his later years. A position that sees him beaten for doing his job. He received his Certificate of Freedom on 12th December 1864. John Capewell's age is given as 64 when he passed away in 1890, with his death registered in Western Australia.




He was baptised in Milwich, Staffordshire on the 28th of December 1823, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Capewell nee Merryjohn. After marrying Lydia Massey in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire on the 11th of July 1842 the couple had six children between 1842 and 1855, 4 appear in the 1851 Census. At the time of conviction, he is recognised as a widow. It is believed his wife passed in 1856 along with his infant daughter. This is quite possibly the cause of his behaviour. He started drinking heavily and found himself with unsavoury characters. On 1st June 1864, John Capewell marries Lydia Jones nee Pritchard, together the couple have 6 children. Capewell after receiving his conditional pardon, continues his trade as a shoemaker and appears in the WA Almanack from 1863 to 1875. He is known to have employed up as many as 45 Ticket of Leave Men during this period. John never again finds himself in trouble with the law. He takes on the role of a bailiff in his later years. A position that sees him beaten for doing his job. He received his Certificate of Freedom on 12th December 1864. John Capewell died at the Colonial Hospital on the 19th May 1890 at the age of 65 years from jaundice. He is buried in the historic East Perth Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
