THE undermentioned Prisoner of the Crown has absconded since last publication:— Margaret Carberry, Edward, 1829, 40, Queen's County, country servant, 5 feet 1 inch, ruddy freckled comp., dark brown hair, blue eyes, red mark on left cheek, from ticket of leave, Wollongong, since the 2nd instant, in company of a man named Matthew Eaton. THOMAS RYAN, Chief Clerk. The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Mon 12 Jul 1852 Page 2 Margaret Carberry, a prisoner of the Crown, was brought up for being illegally at large. The case disclosed the following strange circumstances : -The prisoner arrived here in 1839, under sentence of transportation for life. In 1840, she married one Blore Halden, whom she some time afterwards left, and married a second time in 1846. This, however, was not known to the authorities, and she was allowed a ticket-of-leave for Illawarra, where she lived until 1849, when she absconded, and has since been illegally at large. She was seen in Sydney a few days ago by Halden, who gave information at the Superintendent of Convicts' Office, and this led to her apprehension. She then preferred a counter charge of bigamy against Halden, who also married a second time about 1848. The Bench directed that she should be returned to Government, by the proper officers of which the strange counter charges of bigamy will be investigated.
