Old Bailey: HENRIETTA HANAGAN, MARY CARBEY, Theft > simple larceny, 6th September 1832. Reference Number: t18320906-420 Offence: Theft > simple larceny Verdict: Guilty; Guilty Punishment: Transportation HENRIETTA HANAGAN and MARY CARBEY were indicted for stealing, on the 11th of August , 17 yards of printed cotton, value 8s. , the goods of William Shearman . THOMAS CHURCH . I was passing Mr. Shearman's shop, in Chiswell-street , on the 11th of August, about twelve o'clock, and saw the two prisoners looking at some prints at his door - I watched them, and saw Carbey put her hand under the print, and Hanagan walked round the shop- they then walked up to the print again; Carbey held up her apron, and Hanagan pulled this print down into her apron; Carbey walked off quick with it, and came towards me - the other prisoner was close behind her; I stopped Carbey, and when Hanagan came up I took her also - I took them to the shop. WILLIAM SHEARMAN. I am a linen-draper , in Chiswell-street. This is my print. Hanagan's Defence. I was going past the shop, and the print fell down - she took it up to take it to the shop; this witness took her; I went to ask him what for, and he took me. HANAGAN - GUILTY . Aged 16. CARBEY - GUILTY . Aged 15. Transported for Seven Years . Henrietta Hanagan was also on board. Mary was 4’11” tall, brown hair, light hazel eyes, 30/6/1835: Newcastle gaol – Admitted from Maitland under sentence of 6 months confinement and to be returned to her master. March 1837: Married Henry James Limeburner (Sesostris 1826). They had 5 children. 29/5/1864: Mary died aged 47 at Newcastle. (Henry died 1880).
